Auto darkening helmet doesn't seem to turn dark enough

04 Sep.,2023

I have a Weldmark self darkening welding helmet that doesn't seem to get dark enough. My kids bought it for me maybe 5-6 years ago. I don't use it much, about maybe 2-3 times a year. I went to use it the other day and the batteries were dead. Grabbed two new out of the package "AA" batteries and away I went, seemed to work fine. My youngest some is building a project so I was going to help weld it up. I could see he had already done some spot welding of the joints but he told me the helmet wasn't working right. He said he changed the batteries, he didn't know I changed them in the last month, because he said the darkening feature was flickering on and off. I checked the settings and the sensitivity setting was set low. I turned everything up and did a couple of practice welds. While the darkening feature seemed to go on and off correctly I thought the filter was allowing too much light to come through. The arc left spots in my eyes. I grabbed my old manual helmet and it seemed a lot darker. Like I said, the last time I use the self darkening helmet, about a month ago, I didn't notice anything wrong.

Anyone else have this problem? Any idea on what I can do to further adjust it? I have all of the adjustments turned to the max.
