Shanxi has continued to lead China in green power exports, setting a new record in 2024. According to the Shanxi Provincial Bureau of Statistics, the province exported a total of 16.44 billion kilowatt-hours of new energy last year, marking a historic high. Of that total, 7.66 billion kilowatt-hours were green power, securing Shanxi’s position as the top exporter of green electricity in the country for the second year in a row.
Green power, derived from renewable sources such as wind and solar energy, is a clean, low-carbon alternative to traditional energy. A spokesperson from the Development and Planning Department of the Shanxi Provincial Energy Bureau noted that, as a major energy base in China, Shanxi not only strengthens the country’s traditional coal energy supply but also remains at the forefront of developing renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power.
By the end of 2024, Shanxi’s installed capacity of renewable energy reached 61.89 million kilowatts, making up 50.37% of the province's total power generation capacity. Meanwhile, the number of Shanxi-based new energy companies participating in green power trading has surged from just one in 2021 to 143 today. Shanxi plays a vital role in transmitting electricity to regions such as North China, East China, and Central China, with its power exports accounting for one-third of the province’s total electricity generation. Since launching large-scale electricity exports in 2009, Shanxi has cumulatively delivered over 1.5 trillion kilowatt-hours of power by the end of 2024.
