In general it's a bad idea, but people can and do get away with it in certain applications until that one day... Spring steel has a high carbon content and thus when welded becomes very brittle in the HAZ. Steps can be taken to mitigate the effects, such as pre and post heat depending on the steel in question, but it is not something you should rely on. Especially in a bending load situation, even more so in fatigue.

Since they are new, I'd try to find someone that can use them for their intended purpose.
